Caleb Stewart extended his hitting streak to a season-best eight games with a fourth-inning double and would later score the B-Mets only run in a 3-1 shortcoming versus Portland Tuesday night at NYSEG Stadium. It was Binghamton's fourth straight loss and sixth in its last seven games against Portland.

The Sea Dogs cracked the scoreboard first in the fourth inning against starter Eric Brown. Jorge Jimenez lined a single into center with one out, which led to Jon Still. Then, Still smacked his Eastern-League leading 38th double to plate Jimenez, giving Portland a 1-0 advantage.

Binghamton (48-79) was quick to tie in the last of the frame against starter Felix Doubront. Stewart started off the inning with a double and was followed on base by Shawn Bowman, who singled, and D.J. Wabick, who walked. Doubront induced a lineout from Salvador Paniagua and struck out Mark Kiger looking to get within an out of avoiding run-scoring. However, Emmanuel Garcia worked the count full and drew a bases-loaded walk to push Stewart across, tying the score at one.

Portland (61-66) responded with a run in the fifth on an RBI single from Daniel Nava. Nava led the Sea Dogs with a 3-5 showing including two doubles and a run scored.

Bidding for a run of insurance in the seventh, Stewart came up with a defensive gem. Portland had runners at second and third with one out for Iggy Suarez. Suarez lifted a flyball to right and Juan Apodaca went back to tag from third. Upon gloving the baseball, Stewart threw a one-hop strike to catcher Josh Thole, who applied the tag on Apodaca to end the inning in double-play fashion.

The Sea Dogs would get their run of insurance in the eighth when Nava doubled to start the inning. Jorge Jimenez followed with a one-out single to right, past the drawn in infield, to plate Nava, providing Portland a two-run cushion.

Brown was hung with loss for allowing two runs in 4.2 innings. It was the 14th loss of the season for Brown, tying him for the most in club history for a right-handed pitcher. Arnold Gooch took 14 losses in 1998.

Doubront was solid. The lefty surrendered just a run in six innings on four hits to notch his eighth win.

Binghamton meets the Sea Dogs in the middle game of the three-game set on Wednesday. The B-Mets will send LHP Mike Antonini (6-3, 5.00) to the bump and Portland will counter with RHP Ryne Miller (2-2, 2.28). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 and the radio broadcast on Newsradio 1290 WNBF begins at 6:50 with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show.
