Lincoln Fights Back Again But Early Hole Too Deep

LINCOLN - Sioux City again built an early three-run lead and were again able to stave off the Saltdogs in the late innings to take the series finale 4-3 in front of 3,421 fans at Haymarket Park Sunday evening.

The 'Dogs pulled to within a run on a Joe Ramos sacrifice fly in the bottom of eighth, but stranded the tying run in scoring position in each of the last two innings.

Lincoln fell behind 3-0 early, before Blake Gailen lined a solo home run to right field to lead off the last of the third inning and get the 'Dogs on the board.

Ty Marotz (4-1) pitched eight innings, allowing three runs on 11 hits while striking out seven and walking one to earn the victory. Lindsay Gulin (1-7) went five frames, allowing four runs - three earned - on 10 hits to suffer the loss. Andrew Snowdon allowed two hits in the ninth but no runs to pick up his third save.

Gavin Dickey went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Jorge Cortes and Gailen each booked three-hit nights. Phil Hawke finished 2-for-5 as the Saltdogs outhit the Explorers in a loss for the second straight night.

Sioux City tallied an unearned run in the top of the third inning which turned out to be the difference.

Lincoln stranded 11 runners on base, and 47 total in the four-game series.

The St. Paul Saints come to town Monday night at 7:05 p.m. to open a three-game series with the 'Dogs. John James (5-1, 5.01) is set to pitch for Lincoln against Alberto Rolon (4-0, 1.16) is expected to take the mound for St. Paul. Radio coverage begins at 6:35 p.m. on KFOR 1240.
