St. Paul Saints News Release
GARY, IN (June 19, 2011) - The St. Paul Saints became the final team in the American Association to lose three straight, but it happened on Sunday as they lost 5-4 in 11 innings to the Gary SouthShore Railcats at U.S. Steel Yard.
With the game tied at four in the 11th Adam Klein reached on a one out single and Mike Massaro followed with a single to left. The Saints removed Caleb Thielbar for their closer Robert Manuel. He got pinch hitter Brad Boyer to foul out to third for the second out of the inning. Cristian Guerrero, however, looped a single to center that scored Klein for the winning run.
The Saints were able to send it to extra innings by coming back from a 4-1 deficit. In the sixth Shane Costa led off with a single and Ole Sheldon doubled him to third. Jason Cooper's sacrifice fly made it 4-2. Brandon Tripp grounded out sending Sheldon to third and Ronnie Bourquin worked a walk. Richard Mercado then singled to right field scoring Sheldon to make it 4-3.
It stayed that way until the eighth when Cooper led off the inning with a solo homer to left, his fourth of the season, tying the game at four.
The Saints looked like they would take the lead in the 10th when Costa reached on an infield single and with one out Cooper singled him to second. With two outs a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third. Bourquin then hit a smash up the middle, but instead of going into center field, it hit off the backside of pitcher Chris Chavez, the ball deadened at his feet and Chavez threw Bourquin out at first to end the inning.
The Saints got on the board first in the first when Adam Frost led off with a single and moved to third on Justin Snyder's single. Costa drilled a liner back up the middle that pitcher Jack Frawley snagged and doubled up Snyder at first. Sheldon would drive home Frost with a single to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.
The Railcats, however, answered back quickly in the second when Lorenzo Scott tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly from Kyle Haines to tie it at one.
The Railcats took a 2-1 lead in the third when Craig Maddox doubled, moved to third on a sac bunt and scored on Klein's single.
In the fifth the Railcats extended their lead to 4-1 on a sac fly by Chris Carrara and an RBI single from Guerrero.
The Saints now head to Haymarket Park for a three game series against the Lincoln Saltdogs on Monday evening at 7:05 p.m. The Saints start RHP Alberto Rolon (4-0, 1.16) against Saltdogs RHP John James (5-1, 5.01). The game can be heard on Relevant Radio 1330.
