Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
SHREVEPORT, LA.---The Shreveport-Bossier Captains took home a Father's Day victory Sunday in thrilling fashion, scoring three runs in the bottom of the ninth to overcome a 4-2 deficit and beat Fort Worth 5-4 to sweep the Cats and secure their fourth straight win. It marks the first time all year Shreveport-Bossier has won four in a row.
Captains second baseman Mike Provencher launched a fly ball into the left centerfield gap to score Brian Peterson with the winning run with two outs in the ninth off Fort Worth pitcher Matt Sartor (2-2). With one out in the ninth and the Captains trailing 4-2, Palmer Karr Jr. hit his second home run of the series to bring Shreveport-Bossier to within one. Following a Bryan Frichter walk, pinch hitter Uriak Marquez strike out but Peterson tied the game with a two-out single past the dive of Cats third baseman Travis Metcalf, scoring Fricther to tie the game. After Alex Cowart was hit by a pitch, Provencher came to the plate and put an end to the game.
The win marked the second time this year the Captains won a game after trailing going into the ninth inning.
The game was scoreless until the top of the sixth when Fort Worth catcher Kelley Gulledge hit his first of two home runs in the game off his former battery mate, Captains starter Joel Kirsten. A Marcos Rodriguez double later on in the inning would make it a 2-0 Cats lead.
Shreveport-Bossier got one back in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double by Cowart. But in the top of the seventh Gulledge was at it again, hitting another home to left center, his third of the series. The two-run shot but Fort Worth up 4-1. A Joe Urtuzuastegui sacrifice fly in the seventh would cut the lead to 4-2 but Shreveport-Bossier left two on in the inning against Fort Worth reliever Jimmer Kennedy.
Newly-acquired reliever Lee Henry (2-0) pitched a perfect ninth to keep it a 4-2 game. Henry would earn a win in his first Captains appearance when Shreveport-Bossier won it with their ninth-inning heroics.
The Captains earn the sweep of Fort Worth despite outscoring the Cats by only four runs in three games, 18-14. Shreveport-Bossier takes their four-game winning streak into their next series, a three-game set with South Division leaders, the Grand Prairie AirHogs.
The first game of the series is Monday, June 20 and Grand Prairie will send former National League Rookie of the Year Jason Jennings (4-1, 2.89) to the mound against Shreveport-Bossier's Aaron Cunningham (1-4, 6.41) on Jose Cuervo Margaria Monday and Ladie's Night with free admission to all women over 21 plus 1/2 price Margarita's & frozen drinks.
