Wichita Wingnuts News Release

AMARILLO, TX- The Wichita Wingnuts lost 11-6 to the Amarillo Sox at Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium on Sunday evening.

The Wingnuts had a 6-2 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth, but Amarillo rallied for nine unanswered runs from the fifth through the seventh to re-take the lead. Amarillo's run started with a four-run bottom of the fifth against rookie starter Chad Sherman. Adam De La Garza led off the inning with a single and scored on Cyle Hankerd's RBI triple to straightaway center field. After Lee Cruz grounded out to third base, Van Pope singled home Hankerd to make it 6-4. Tim Alberts doubled to the center field fence to score Pope. Alberts took third on a single from Matthew Tucker and scored on Kevin Butler's sacrifice fly to left field to tie the game.

Hankerd cracked a two-run home run against Jared Simon in the bottom of the sixth to give Amarillo an 8-3 lead. Hankerd then drove in two more to lead a three-run rally in the seventh in which all of the runs were unearned against the Wingnuts.

Trailing by five runs in the eighth, the Wingnuts put runners on first and second with one out against reliever Pat Overholt. Thomas Fitzgerald lined a ball down the left field line that struck the chalk but was ruled foul by home plate umpire Jay Trosper. Overholt eventually retired Fitzgerald on a line drive to right and escaped the inning without allowing a run.

In the top of the ninth, the Wingnuts had second and third with one out, when Jorge Delgado ripped a line drive down the left field line that again hit the chalk but was ruled foul by third base umpire Danny Hymel. Gary Perinar eventually struck out Delgado and then retired Josh Workman on a groundout to shortstop to end the game.

Amarillo took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Pope drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on an error charged to Fitzgerald at second base. Tucker hit a flyball double to left field that scored Pope to make it 1-0. The Sox scored again in the third on a close play. With the bases loaded and one out, Tim Alberts narrowly beat Josh Horn's relay to first base on a potential double play.

Josh Workman put the Wingnuts on the board in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Juan Richardson. The Wingnuts then scored five in the fifth to take the lead. Ryan Patterson hit a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Fitzgerald with the tying run. With two outs Juan Richardson hit a double to left-center field that gave Wichita a 3-2 advantage. Delgado followed with an RBI single up the middle. Workman capped off the rally with a two-run home run down the right field line.

Overholt earned the win in relief, working three and one-third scoreless innings.

Sherman took a no-decision, allowing six runs, five earned, in four and two-thirds. Sherman struck out five, walked five, and allowed six hits.

Travis Lawler started for Amarillo and also took a no-decision, allowing six earned runs in four and two-thirds innings on nine hits and one walk. Lawler struck out three.

Simon took the loss, allowing two earned runs in one and one-third.

Sherman was signed prior to the game. Sherman finished his college career this season at the University of Texas-Tyler, going 8-2 with a 1.94 ERA.
