Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
FARGO, N.D. - The Sioux Falls Pheasants battled hard on Sunday afternoon in Fargo but came up on the short end of a 4-3 loss to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. The two clubs split a four-game series.
The Pheasants trailed 4-2 in the top of the ninth with one out when they strung together four balls hit in the infield, including an RBI fielder's choice from Henry Contreras, to shave the lead to 4-3. The final hit by Gus Milner put Contreras at second base as the tying run. Mark Shorey then hit a rocketing, low line drive to left field that was snagged by RedHawks' left fielder Jason James to end the game.
Two of the league's elite starter faced off on the mound. Fargo-Moorhead starter Jake Laber (5-1) came out with the win over the Pheasants' Ben Moore (4-2). Laber held the Pheasants to two runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings. Moore had a season-high nine strikeouts in six-plus innings but gave up all four runs on nine hits.
Each time Fargo-Moorhead took a two-run lead, the Pheasants responded with a run. Fargo-Moorhead scored twice in the second inning on James' double and a single from Phil Britton. Shorey answered with a leadoff home run in the fourth, his fourth of the year. Down 3-1 in the seventh, Trevor Lawhorn doubled in Reggie Abercrombie, who led off the frame with a single.
Shorey led the Pheasants offense with a 2-for-5 afternoon with a home run and an RBI. Joe Anthonsen also had two hits.
Casey Hoorelbeke earned his third save by pitching the final 2 1/3 innings.
