American Association Early Game Recaps

Published on June 19, 2011 under American Association (AA) News Release

Fargo-Moorhead 4, Sioux Falls 3

Four different RedHawks batted in a run, and Fargo-Moorhead survived a Sioux Falls ninth-inning rally to win 4-3. Fargo-Moorhead LF Jason James doubled in a run in the bottom of the second, and C Phil Britton then singled in a run to make it 2-0 RedHawks. Sioux Falls DH Mark Shorey pegged one back for the Pheasants with his solo home run in the top of the fourth, cutting the deficit to 2-1. RedHawks 1B Jesse Hoorelbeke hit an RBI single in the fifth inning to make it 3-1 Fargo-Moorhead. The RedHawks took a 4-2 lead into the top of the ninth. In Sioux Falls' last at-bat, C Henry Contreras drove in a run, making it a one-run game. That would be as close as the Pheasants would get because RedHawks reliever Casey Hoorelbeke got Shorey to line out to left field to end the game. RedHawks starting pitcher Jake Laber pitched six and two-thirds innings and allowed two earned runs to earn the win.

Gary SouthShore 5, St. Paul 4 (11 Innings)

Gary SouthShore DH Cristian Guerrero singled in the winning run in the bottom of the eleventh as the RailCats edged the St. Paul Saints 5-4. RailCats LF Adam Klein reached base with a one-out single, advanced to second on CF Mike Massaro's single, and then came around to score the winning run on Guerrero's game-winning hit. Klein finished 4-for-6 from the plate with two runs scored and an RBI, and Guerrero had two hits and two RBIs in the game. The RailCats had a 4-1 lead after five innings, but the Saints scored two in the sixth on RBIs from 1B Jason Cooper and C Richard Mercado; the Saints then leveled the score at 4-4 in the eighth when Cooper smacked a solo home run. Gary SouthShore reliever Brian Grening earned the win for the second consecutive game, coming on in relief and pitching a scoreless top of the eleventh inning.
