Florence Y'alls News Release
Florence, KY-The Florence Freedom(36-31) got an outstanding start from Alec Lewis as he led them to a 7-1 victory over the Schaumburg Boomers(40-27) on Tuesday night to end a two game losing streak. Lewis improved to 4-6 after he went 8.2 innings giving up his only run in the 9th, while striking out a season high seven batters.
Lewis got backed by some early run support as Drew Rundle and Jim Jacquot each provided two run hits in the 1st against Boomer starter Alex Rivers. Rundle hit a ground rule double to left center scoring David Harris and Peter Fatse. The next batter Jacquot lined a two run single into centerfield scoring Eddie Rodriguez and Rundle to give Florence a 4-0 lead. The Freedom added to their lead in the 5th, as Pierre LePage led off with an inside the park homerun. LePage hit a shallow fly ball to left field as Schaumbuurg's shortstop Karexon Sanchez collided with left fielder Sean Mahley on the play enabling LePage to round the bases for his second homerun of the season. Both Sanchez and Mahley left the game as the night progressed. Fatse also added an RBI single in that same inning ballooning the lead to 6-0. The Freedom scored their final run in the 7th on an RBI groundout by Harris.
Lewis was on his game all night, getting nine groundball outs, and was given a chance to complete the game. In the 9th, K.C. Judge led off the inning with a single, which was followed by another single by Frank Pfister. With two outs, and runners on the corners, Nate Baumann lined a single into the outfield to break up Lewis's bid of a complete game shutout. Matt Kline was then brought in to record the final out of the game as he got Tony Delmonico to ground out to second base.
Rivers(2-2) took the loss as he went 6 innings allowing 8 hits and 5 earned runs. Fatse led the Freedom offense by going 3-4 with an RBI, while Rodriguez and LePage each produced two hits. With Rodriguez's single in the 1st inning, he extended his season long hitting streak to 20 consecutive games.
The Freedom and Boomers will play game two of their three game series Wednesday night. RHP Cody Griebling(2-1, 2.05) will start for Schaumburg, while Sean Gregory(6-5) 3.80 gets the ball for the Freedom. Wednesday's game can be heard starting at 6:50 pm with Steve Jarnicki on Real Talk 1160 AM and realtalk1160.com.
