Miners Fall Short against Normal

Marion, IL - The Normal CornBelters jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and the Miners ultimately couldn't find their way back as the CornBelters defeated the Miners 5-2. Miners starter Brian Fowler (5-6) pitched 6.2 innings and gave up five runs (all earned), walked and struck out one batter.

The CornBelters jumped out to an early lead off Miners starter Fowler as catcher Bubby Williams hit a base hit and RBI with two outs to score first baseman Ernie Banks to give the CornBelters a 1-0 lead. Fowler settled down as he only gave up two hits the next two innings but with two outs in the top of the fifth inning, Fowler gave up a three run home run to right fielder Steven Felix to give Normal a 4-0 lead.

The Miners would get on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning off CornBelters starter Drew Provence as designated hitter Ken Gregory hit a base hit and RBI with two outs to make it a 4-1 game. Provence (3-1) would leave the game after six innings, giving up one run off seven hits. Normal would add another run in the top of the seventh inning off Fowler as left fielder Bobby Rinard hit a base hit and RBI to give the CornBelters a 5-1 lead.

The Miners would get a run off CornBelters reliever Mitch Mormann in the bottom of the eighth as Chad Maddox hit a double and a RBI to make it a 5-2 game. With one out in the eighth, Mascheri pitched out of trouble and ultimately pitched to get his tenth save as the CornBelters won the game 5-2. Miners reliever Darrin Tew pitched well in relief as he went 2.1 innings and only gave up one hit. He struck out three batters.

With the loss, the Miners fall to 38-29 on the season and trail Traverse City by five games in the Eastern Division. The Miners will send LHP Daniel Calhoun to the mound in game two as he'll be opposed by RHP Tyler Lavigne. First pitch at Rent One Park will be at 7:05 pm.
