Rockford RiverHawks News Release

AVON, Ohio - An extra-inning marathon ended on a hit by a player who saw most of the game from the bench.

Wally Correa hit a walkoff RBI single in the 12th inning on Tuesday as the Lake Erie Crushers beat the Rockford RiverHawks, 2-1, at All Pro Freight Stadium. Correra, who entered the game in the top of the 12th as a defensive replacement at shortstop, ended the game with a single just inside the bag at third base.

Four Rockford pitchers combined on a six-hitter in the loss. Rockford starter Drew Rucinski gave up a first-inning run on two hits, including a Russ Moldenhauer single, then retired 12 straight. After that streak broke with the only walk he allowed, Rucinski retired the final 10 batters he faced. Rucinski struck out five and went eight innings on just 91 pitches, 63 for strikes. He retired the side in order six times.

Three Crushers combined to three-hit the RiverHawks. Eric Gonzalez-Diaz was perfect through three innings, then walked Ted Obregon to start the fourth. Obregon advanced on a sacrifice bunt and a passed ball, then scored on a Javier Herrera groundout. Michael Hur followed with a double, the only hit Gonzalez-Diaz gave up in an eight-inning start. Gonzalez-Diaz struck out five and walked one in a 97-pitch outing.

In the bottom of the 12th, Jordan Goldschmidt (0-1) gave up a leadoff single to Andrew Davis and a two-out hit to Brian Erie that advanced Davis to third. Correa, who successfully checked on a two-strike pitch, hit a smash down the line into left to drive in Davis.

Lake Erie closer Jonathan Kountis (4-2) pitched 1 1/3 hitless innings for the win.

Rockford lost for the first time in five extra-inning games this season.

The RiverHawks' next home game is at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, when they host Florence. Kids eat free on Tuesday nights with paid admission.
