(Evansville, IN)- The Evansville Otters topped the Joliet Slammers in a back-and-fourth game to open their three-game series in Evansville in a 7-3 final.

Joliet's Tommy Mendoza and Evansville's Wynn Pelzer kept the ballgame scoreless through four and a half innings, but the Otters broke through in the fifth. With runners on second and third, Greg Fontenot lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home the game's first run. They tacked on another in the sixth when Steven Marino also brought around a run on a sac fly to give the Otters a 2-0 lead.

David Christensen led off the seventh with a triple for Joliet, and Kyle Maunus knocked him in to cut the lead in half.

When the Slammers came to the plate in the eighth, a rain delay kept the teams off the field for about 20 minutes. But Joliet came out of the break swinging, tying it at two when Abel Nieves tagged a sac fly, and an fielding error by Evansville gave the Slammers a 3-2 lead.

But Evansville powered back. DeAngelo Mack doubled to tie it up, Brett Chamberlain followed it up with an RBI single, and Runey Davis put the nail in the coffin on a three-run home run to make it 7-3 Otters.

Mendoza threw a strong six innings on just two runs, and Chase Doremus tossed a scoreless inning of relief. But Daniel Carela gave up the go-ahead runs for the loss, and Geoff Brown finished the effort.

The Slammers continue in Evansville against the Otters on Wednesday. Fans can listen to the game on AM 1340 WJOL with Aaron Morse calling the action.
