Wild Things Get by Rascals

Washington Wild Things News Release

O'FALLON, MO - A.J. Nunziato went 1-for-4 with two RBI's to help lead the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, to their third win in their last four in a 5-3 victory over the River City Rascals on Tuesday night.

Shawn Smith earned his first win of the season for the Things, going five strong innings while giving up two runs on two hits.

As they had found themselves a few times against Lake Erie, the Wild Things trailed early in Tuesday night's contest after the Rascals scratched across an unearned run in the bottom of the first.

Resilience is what has been key for the Wild Things during this recent road trip, and that trait can be traced to their acquisition of Mark Samuelson, Chris Lloyd, Brad Agustin and Jim Vahalik. The four newest Wild Things have helped jumpstart the Wild Things offense and produce some wins.

Washington came right back once again Tuesday night with three runs to take the lead in the top of the second. Vahalik crossed the plate for the Things' first run courtesy of a sacrifice fly by Andrew Heck.

Two batters later, Nunziato ripped a 3-1 pitch for a double that plated Gus Benusa and Brad Agustin to give the Wild Things a 3-1 lead.

The Rippers wouldn't go away quietly in the bottom half, however, striking for one run to cut the deficit in half.

In the fifth, Washington found the scoreboard again. This time it was Shain Stoner scoring Mark Samuelson on a ground rule double to extend the lead to 4-2.

An inning later the Wild Things made it 5-2, taking advantage of a leadoff walk and a wild pitch that scored Andrew Heck.

Chris Andreas homered to bring the Rascals within two, but that would be as close as they would get, leaving runners stranded in the eighth and ninth while the Things' bullpen slammed the door on River City.

Orlando Santos came on in the ninth and recorded his fifth save of the year to secure the win.

Tomorrow night will be game two of the series with Justin Hall on the mound for Washington. It's a 7:35 first pitch with pregame coverage beginning at 7:35 on WJPA. The Wild Things return home to CONSOL Energy Park this Friday, August 3rd to host Lake Erie. Tickets are still available for tomorrow night's contest and throughout the homestand by visiting the CONSOL Energy Park box office, at www.washingtonwildthings.com or by calling 1-866- WILD.
