Lerud's Four Runs Rock Mets

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Baysox offense recorded season-highs in hits and runs as they blew-out the Binghamton Mets 14-4 on the road Thursday evening to end a three game losing streak. With the win, the Baysox improve to 38-39 on the season.

For the second time in a week, the Baysox set a new season-high with 19 hits in the game. The Baysox set their previous high of 15 hits June 26 and again June 27. The 14 runs scored by the Baysox tops the previous high of 12, which they set May 6 and again June 19. Finally, the eight-run margin of victory also tied Baysox biggest of the season.

Right-handed starting pitcher Chorye Spoone pitched five and one-third innings and allowed just one run on five hits while striking out three though he did issue five walks in the win.

The Baysox jumped out to an early lead in the top of the second inning against Binghamton starter Tobi Stoner, who threw seven scoreless innings against the Baysox in his last start. Catcher Steve Lerud hit a lead off triple to center field and scored when shortstop Pedro Florimon grounded out to put the Baysox up 1-0.

Binghamton tied the game in the bottom of the second inning against Spoone. With two outs, Brahiam Maldonado walked and stole second base with Raul Reyes batting. Reyes then drew a walk and Travis Ozga plated Maldonado with a single to left field to tie the game at 1-1.

Bowie reclaimed the lead with another run in the top of the third inning when first baseman Joe Mahoney hit a two out home run to right field to make the score 2-1. The home run was Mahoney's third of the season.

The Baysox extended their lead with three runs in the top of the sixth inning. Mahoney drew a lead off walk and went to second when designated hitter Robbie Widlansky singled to left field. Lerud laid down a sacrifice bunt, but after a throwing error by Stoner, Mahoney scored from second while Widlansky went to third and Lerud to second base. Florimon followed with a single to right field that scored Widlansky and moved Lerud to third. Right fielder Ronnie Welty then drew a walk to load the bases before Roy Merritt replaced Stoner on the mound for the Mets. Left fielder Kyle Hudson grounded into a force out, but plated Lerud to put the Baysox up 5-1.

Bowie continued to build their lead with three more runs in the top of the seventh inning. Second baseman LJ Hoes singled to left field with one out and moved to second when Widlansky singled to left field with two outs. Lerud then singled to center field, scoring Hoes and moving Widlansky to third where he scored on a wild pitch by Merritt. Florimon singled to shortstop and moved Lerud to third where he scored when Welty singled to left field to put the Baysox up 8-1.

The Baysox recorded their third straight multi-run inning in the top of the eighth inning. Center fielder Xavier Avery hit a lead off single to center field and moved to second when third baseman Buck Britton was hit by a pitch. Hoes then singled to center field to load the bases and after Mahoney popped out on the infield fly rule, Widlansky singled to right field to score Avery and keep the bases loaded. Lerud then singled to right field to drive in two runs and move Widlansky to second. Brandon Sage replaced Merritt on the mound for the Mets and the first batter he faced, Florimon, homered to left field to drive in three more runs, giving the Baysox a 14-1 lead.

Binghamton got three runs back in the bottom of the eighth inning against right-handed reliever Wynn Pelzer. Josh Satin reached on a fielding error by Hoes and went to second when Allan Dykstra singled to center field. Salomon Manriquez singled to left field to load the bases and Maldonado singled to left field to score Satin and keep the bases loaded. Reyes grounded out, but scored Dykstra and moved runners to second and third where Manriquez scored when Ozga grounded out to make the score 14-4.

The Mets scored two more runs against right-handed reliever Brandon Cooney in the bottom of the ninth. Jordany Valdespin hit a one out single to second base and went to second when Satin singled to center field. Dykstra walked to load the bases and Manriquez singled to right field to score Valdespin and keep the bases loaded. Cooney then walked Maldonado to drive in a run and make the final score 14-6.

Pelzer pitched two and two-thirds innings and allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out one. Cooney pitched the ninth inning and allowed two runs on three hits while walking two and striking out three.

Lerud recorded his first four-hit game of the season and also recorded the team's first four-run game of the season. The catcher also drove in three runs and recorded two extra-base hits.

Florimon continued his recent hot streak with five RBIs in the game. It was the team's second five-RBI game of the season and Florimon needed three hits, including a three-run homer to record his RBIs. In his last five games, Florimon has 11 hits, eight RBIs and five extra-base hits.

Four Baysox players recorded multiple runs in the game, five recorded multiple hits, and two had multiple RBIs as the Baysox offense picked up where it left off the last time they played Binghamton at home and scored six runs on 15 hits.

Friday, LHP Mike Ballard (3-0, 3.96) takes the mound for the Baysox as take on the Binghamton Mets. His opponent will be RHP Matt Harvey (0-1, 7.71).

The Baysox began a seven-game road trip Monday, June 27 and return home Monday, July 4 for a four game home stand that features their Independence Day Celebration with an extended fireworks extravaganza Monday, Tailgate Tuesday and Free Food Tuesday night, Veteran's Appreciation Night Wednesday and the Mystery Bobblehead Giveaway and Festivus Miracle Thursday night.
