Fast Start Provides Plenty in Sixth Straight Win
June 30, 2011 - Eastern League (EL1)
Trenton Thunder News Release
(Trenton, NJ) - Scoring seven runs in the first two innings, the Trenton Thunder (47-32) held on to win 8-6 over the Altoona Curve (34-44) on Thursday night at Waterfront Park. In the team's sixth straight win, Melky Mesa's two run double paced Trenton to a four-run first inning and Bradely Suttle's two-run single capped a three-run second inning. In game one of a four-game set, Steve Garrison grabbed his second straight win and Ray Kruml and Corban Joseph both had three hits for Trenton, who win for the 29th time in 40 games at home in 2011.
After the Curve, the defending Eastern League champions, scored an unearned run off of Steve Garrison in the top of the first inning, the Thunder immediately took their first lead of the game. Corban Joseph doubled home Ray Kruml just two batters into the game to tie the score 1-1. Then, with one out and the bases loaded, Melky Mesa brought in two runs with his double down the left field line. Rob Lyerly capped the offensive outburst with a one-out, RBI-groundout to second base to give his squad a 4-1 advantage.
After Altoona tied the score on a Starling Marte three-run homerun in the top of the second, Trenton answered with three runs of their own. Austin Romine scored Ray Kruml on an infield single, and Bradley Suttle lined a single to centerfield to score two runs, giving the Thunder a 7-4 lead. Suttle's forty second and forty third runs batted in of the season tie him with Cody Johnson for the team lead.
Ewing native Steve Garrison surrendered five earned runs in five innings and earned his second win in a Thunder uniform. The lefty Garrison turned the ball over to the new and improved Thunder bullpen as Chase Whitley, Josh Romanski and Alan Horne nabbed the final twelve outs. The bullpen was spotless and did not allow a run to score other than a runner that Whitley inherited from Garrison.
The Thunder will continue their four-game series with the Altoona Curve Friday night at 7:05 PM from Waterfront Park in Trenton, New Jersey. Trenton will send RHP Dellin Betances (4-3, 2.37) to the mound, while Altoona will counter with RHP Phillip Irwin (1-1, 2.45). Tune in to the game on 91.3 WTSR and on trentonthunder.com. The SBLI Pre-Game Show with Jay Burnham and Hank Fuerst begins at 6:45 PM.
Independence Day Weekend will get started on Friday night with Chase's Birthday Party and a Dog Bowl giveaway presented by Arm & Hammer, Frontline and Heartguard to the first 1,000 fans 18 and older. All dog owners are invited to bring their dogs to Waterfront Park. For ticket information, call 609-394-3300 or log on to trentonthunder.com.
