Lexington Legends News Release
An eight-run second inning propelled the visiting Lexington Legends to an 8-5 win over the Kannapolis Intimidators Tuesday night. The Legends had 15 hits in the game, equaling their hit total in Monday night's 12-1 victory over Kannapolis in the series opener.
The Legends' big inning started with a Kannapolis error, as third baseman Ian Gac overthrew first base after fielding Jonathan Meyer's grounder. Meyer reached second on the error and scored on a base hit by Kody Hinze. Hinze advanced to second on the throw to the plate, and moved on to third on an infield out by Aaron Bray. Rene Garcia followed with the first of his three singles, scoring Hinze. Grant Hogue singled, moving Garcia to third. Pitcher Matt Hopps threw past first on a pickoff attempt, and Garcia scored to give the Legends a 3-0 lead.
Hogue, who was not able to advance on the error, stole second, and came around to score on a base hit by Miguel Arrendel. Jiovanni Mier doubled into the left field corner, scoring Arrendel to make it 5-0. J.D. Martinez drove in Mier with a single. Jake Goebbert followed with another single, advancing Martinez to second. A passed ball allowed both runners to move up a base, and Meyer, batting for the second time in the inning, singled to bring in Martinez. Hinze's sacrifice fly to right field scored Goebbert with the eighth run of the inning.
The Intimidators rallied with two runs in the third inning, two in the fourth and one in the fifth, but Legends relievers Kirk Clark and Arcenio Leon closed the door. Clark (2-0), who entered the game with one out in the fifth in relief of starter Tanner Bushue, picked up the win after pitching two and two-thirds innings. He allowed one hit and no runs. Arcenio Leon, who retired Kannapolis in order in the eighth and ninth, earned his first save.
Hogue, Arrendell, Martinez and Goebbert each contributed two hits. Martinez is now 12 for 26 for the season (.461).
The two teams play Wednesday morning at 10:05 at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium in Kannapolis.
