Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Savannah, GA - All eight Augusta GreenJackets runs scored with two outs in their respective innings as the Jackets continued their winning ways with an 8-3 win over the Savannah Sand Gnats on Tuesday night. The victory gives Augusta their fifth win in six games this season.
Despite allowing 13 hits, Augusta pitching kept the Gnats at bay all night long with 15 strikeouts, including 13 from relievers Jose Valdez, Chris Gloor and Hector Correa. The 8-3 win also marks the first time all season that the GreenJackets have been outhit in a game.
Ryan Cavan led the way with a three-hit night, including a pair of doubles and an RBI. Luke Anders doubled twice and Chris Dominguez added a pair of hits for the Jackets, who led on three separate occasions and haven't allowed a Sand Gnats lead in the series.
Anders brought home the first run of three he'd knock in with a sacrifice fly in the first inning to get the Jackets on the board. Savannah tied the game in the third when Alonzo Harris tripled and then scored when an errant throw went into the Augusta dugout. In the fourth, Anders scored from third on a passed ball with two strikes and two outs to allow the Jackets to regain the lead. The pesky Gnats tied the game a second time in the bottom of the fourth on Jeff Flagg's RBI single.
Augusta exploded for four runs in the fifth, punctuated by a two-run Anders double. The Jackets never lost the lead from that point forward, hanging on for the win that clinches a winning road trip and at least a series split in Savannah.
Valdez (1-0) fanned five in 1.2 innings of scoreless, one-hit relief to get the win. Armando Rodriguez (0-1), Savannah's starter, was tagged for the loss after allowing four runs on six hits in 4.2 innings. Rodriguez walked two and struck out four.
The GreenJackets will send Chris Heston (0-0, 0.00) to the mound in search of his first win of the year against Jimmy Fuller (1-0, 0.00) on Wednesday night. First pitch will come at 7:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 6:50 p.m. on WRDW-AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
