Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
Despite playing their best game of the 2010 season, an eight-run second inning doomed the Kannapolis Intimidators, having their early season skid reach six games. The Intimidators (0-6) battled back and threatened the lead, but fell short 8-5 at the hands of the Lexington Legends in game two of a four game series.
Matt Hopps in a spot start tossed a clean first inning before running into trouble in the second inning. All told 12 batters were sent to the dish with eight hits and an error helping plate all eight runs on the night for the Legends (4-2). Hopps (0-1) was lifted with one out in the inning in favor of Brandon Kloess who started a tremendous stretch for the Intimidators bullpen.
Kloess threw 3 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball before two scoreless from Garrett Johnson and two more from Kyle Bellamy. All told, the Intimidators pen threw 7 2/3 scoreless, allowing four hits and a walk while striking out six.
Facing top prospect Tanner Bushue, who threw 4.1 scoreless in his season debut, the Intimidators got to him in the third as they scored twice, beginning the rally with no one on and two out. Daniel Wagner doubled with two on to make it 8-2. The Intimidators then cut the lead to four with two more in the fourth, runs scoring on an error and on a ground ball double play lessening the threat in the inning but making it 8-4. The biggest threat came in the next inning as Bushue walked the bases loaded and Nick Ciolli singled Jeff Tezak home to make it 8-5. However, with Kirk Clark in the ballgame, he stuck out Brady Shoemaker and got Jorge Castillo to fly out to left to end the inning with the bases loaded.
Clark (2-0) worked 2.2 scoreless for his second win of the early season and Arcenio Leon got a two-inning save, working the eighth and ninth perfect.
The Intimidators, still in search for their first win, will get back on the diamond on Wednesday morning at 10:05 am for game three of the series. Lefty Joe Serafin (0-1) will take to the hill for Kannapolis and he will be opposed by righty Juan Minaya (0-0).
