Hickory Crawdads News Release
ASHEVILLE, NC - Crawdads starter RHP Joe Wieland had a second-consecutive good start, but the bullpen couldn't hold on to a slim lead, losing to the Asheville Tourists, 9-4, in front of 1,143 at McCormick Field in Asheville on Tuesday night.
The 'Dads (3-3) jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead when LF Cristian Santana launched his first homer of the season to left field in the top of the second inning.
Wieland (0-1, 0.90 ERA) pitched five scoreless innings with five strikeouts and a walk, while allowing just three hits for the no-decision. The Hickory bullpen didn't fare quite as well, relinquishing nine runs to the Tourists in three innings.
Asheville took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth against LHP Chad Bell (0-1, 10.80 ERA), who was charged with the loss for the Crawdads, on 1B Mike Zuanich's first of two two-run doubles. The Tourists added four more runs in the seventh to push their lead to 6-1.
Hickory began an attempted comeback in the top of the eighth inning. With runners on second and third, LF Miguel Velazquez doubled to left field to bring in two runs. 1B Jared Prince then doubled home Velazquez to pull the Crawdads to within two, 6-4.
The Tourists piled on three more insurance runs in the bottom the eighth to close out the scoring at 9-4
