COMSTOCK PARK - Josh Lee tied the game on a ground rule double in the eighth and Wilkin Ramirez followed with a go-ahead single as the Whitecaps snapped a four game losing streak with a 4-3 win over South Bend. For the Silver Hawks, the loss ended an eight game winning streak.
West Michigan starter Randor Bierd allowed six hits and a pair of runs over the first two innings, but went on to retire 16 in a row, beginning with the last two South Bend batters in the second. Bierd finished with six hits and one earned run allowed in seven innings with seven strikeouts.
Reliever Ian Ostlund pitched the eighth and ninth to earn the victory. He gave up a solo home run in the eighth to Augustin Murillo, who went deep three times in the last two games of the series.
Justin Justice scored the Whitecaps first run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Luis Sabino. The run cut the lead to 2-1.
Allen Mottram had an RBI single in the second for South Bend. A. J. Shappi suffered his first loss of the season by allowing all four Whitecaps runs on eight hits over seven innings.
Another trip to the West: The Whitecaps open a four game series at Wisconsin on Tuesday.
