Lansing Lugnuts News Release
Lansing, Mich.- Reid Brignac went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and blasted his fourth homer and Francisco Leandro added a two-run shot as the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays(14-16) earned a split of the four-game series with the Lugnuts(18-13) at Oldsmobile Park with a 7-2 win on Monday night. With the loss, Lansing ends its eight game homestand with a .500 mark, 4-4 and is now 11-10 at home in 2005.
The Lugnuts took the early lead in the first inning off Brandon Mann(3-3) when Curtis Thigpen singled with one out and back-to-back walks to Eric Nielsen and Chip Cannon loaded the bases for Luke Hetherington. Hetherington reached on a fielders choice to score Thigpen, but Jason Armstrong couldn't drive in any more runs as he hit into a fielders choice to end the inning.
The Devil Rays tied it in the second off Juan Perez(2-3) when John Jaso doubled to right, went to third on an error by Christian Snavely and scored on a single by Shaun Cumberland. Southwest Michigan took the lead for good in the third by plating three more runs off Perez, making it 4-1. Fernando Perez doubled to left, stole third and scored on a throwing error by Thigpen. Brignac singled behind that and scored on the homer by Leandro.
Thigpen's second homer of the year, a solo shot in the third, made it 4-2. That, however, turned out to be Lansing's final offense of the night as Mann and Calvin Carpenter combined to shut out the Lugnuts over the final 6.2 innings.
Southwest Michigan added the game's final runs with two in the sixth off Perez and Jordy Templet on RBI's by Tommy Nichols and Josh Asanovich and on Brignac's solo shot in the ninth off Adrian Martin. Carpenter worked the final three innings and fanned five to earn his first save of the season. Thigpen and Jason Armstrong each had two hits for Lansing, which collected just four all night. The Lugnuts will now hit the road for four games as they travel to Burlington, Iowa for the first game of a four-game series starting Tuesday night at Community Field. A.J. Wideman gets the start for Lansing while Matt Campbell goes for the Bees. Game time is set for 8:00 EST.
