
Fuld on DL, Chiefs Add LHP Layden

PEORIA, ILâThe Peoria Chiefs in conjunction with the Chicago Cubs have announced that centerfielder Sam Fuld has been place on the disabled list retroactive to May 6th. Fuld injured his shoulder sliding into third base Thursday night at home against the Fort Wayne Wizards. Taking Fuld's place on the Chiefs roster is LHP Tim Layden who joined the Chiefs Monday in Kane County.
Fuld appeared in 25 games before injuring his shoulder sliding head first into third base Thursday night. The former 10th round pick out of Stanford was batting .231 with five doubles, a triple and three stolen bases. The everyday centerfielder mostly batted leadoff and also contributed two outfield assists so far this season.
Layden joins the Chiefs from extended spring training in Mesa, AZ. He was drafted in the 6th round in 2004 out of Duke University. In 2004 Layden made his pro debut in the Arizona Rookie League in Mesa and went 1-1 with a 2.62 ERA. He made nine starts in 12 appearances and struck out 28 batters in 44 2/3 innings of work. Layden is a native of Deer Park, NY and will turn 23 in late December.
The Chiefs now have four players on the DL: 1B Ryan Norwood (ankle), RHP Will Fenton (shoulder), OF Ryan Harvey (back) and OF Fuld (shoulder). In addition, 2B Eric Patterson has missed eight straight games with a sore hamstring, RHP Jon Hunton has been unavailable for the last three games with a sore arm, C Alan Rick left Sunday's game with a sore knee but is expected to start Monday and LHP Chris Shaver took a ground ball off the ankle Sunday and has a swollen ankle.
The Chiefs are 2-1 on the current eight game road trip heading into tonight's series finale at Kane County. Peoria will then head to Beloit, WI for a four game set with the Snappers. The Chiefs return home for four games against the Burlington Bees starting on Saturday May 14 with the Zooperstars in town and a post-game fireworks show.
