Dayton Dragons News Release

Grand Chute, WI – Three times in 2005, the Dayton Dragons (12-18) have been one victory away from picking up a series win over an opponent. Three times the Dragons lost and split the series. Monday night, Dayton had a fourth opportunity to gain a series win, this time around at Fox Cities Stadium against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (17-14). The fourth time was the charm as the Dragons came from behind scoring the final three runs in the game for a 6-4 win and three of four in the series.

After a pair of scoreless innings, the teams traded runs in the third inning. The Dragons picked up an RBI double from Jeremiah Piepkorn. Piepkorn and Ben Himes we reassigned to the Dragons earlier in the day and in his second at bat laced a double off T-Rat starter Mark Lowe (ND) inside the bag at third that scored Himes who had drawn a walk and stole second for a 1-0 lead. Wisconsin came back against Damian Ursin (ND) on an infield single a pair of walks to load the bases. Ursin forced home a run with a walk and the game was tied at 1-1.

Dayton got to Lowe again in the third, loading the bases for the second time in the game. Lowe walked the first two hitters he faced in the inning and was then lifted from the game with an injury. Ramon Martinez (ND) replaced Lowe and hit Cody Strait to load the bases. Phil Gentry followed with a two RBI double and the Dragons led 3-1.

Wisconsin came back with three in the fourth off Ursin. The Dayton starter gave up back-to-back hits to open the inning and with one down Josh Womack got the first run of the inning home with a run scoring single to close the Timber Rattlers to within a run at 3-2. With two on and one down, Rob Johnson gave the home team the lead with an RBI double to left that scored a pair of runs and Wisconsin led for the first time at 4-3. Ursin lasted 4.1 innings giving up five hits and four runs, all of which were earned. The righty struck out three and walked four and was saddled with his fourth no decision of the season.

The Dragons tied the game in the top of the sixth inning off the T-Rats bullpen. Facing Roman Martinez (ND) Cody Strait snuck a line drive homer just inside the foul pole in the left field corner for his first home run of the season and the game was tied at 4-4. Dayton got to the pen again in the seventh for the go ahead run. Piepkorn's second of three double on the night snapped the tie and gave the Miami Valley's team the 5-4 lead. Double number two on the night came off of Kendall Bergdall (LP, 0-1).

If not for Piepkorn, Camilo Vazquez (WP, 1-1) may have been the star of the game. In 3.0 innings of work Vazquez fanned six, walked one and did not allow a hit in picking up his first win of the season. John Purdom added an insurance run with an RBI double in the top of the ninth, plating Piepkorn who led the inning off with his third double of the night. Blake Hendley (SV, 2) picked up his second save of the series with a scoreless ninth.

The Dragons travel to Clinton, Iowa to open a four game series against the Clinton Lumber Kings at Riverview Stadium beginning Tuesday night. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM carries the game live beginning with the pre game show at 6:30 PM. The first pitch against the Midwest League affiliate of the Texas Rangers 7:00 PM. RHP Jon George gets the start for the Dragons in the opening game of the series, while RHP Eric Hurley gets the start for Lumber Kings.
