
Chiefs Fall to Cougars; Split Series

Geneva, IL â The Peoria Chiefs fell to the Kane County Cougars 5-1 Monday night splitting a four game series in which each team posted an unbelievable 9th inning comeback. With the loss the Chiefs fall to 12-19 on the season, 8-8 away from O'Brien Field.
After leaving a pair of runners on base in the 1st, the Chiefs scored once in the 2nd against Cougars starter Ryan Webb. Alan Rick singled with one out and Jose Rios followed with a basehit to right. Alfred Joseph was hit by a pitch, loading the bases for Drew Larsen. Larsen lined out to left but Rick scored for a 1-0 Peoria lead. Webb recovered to retire Alberto Garcia as the Chiefs left two more on base.
Lee Gwaltney cruised through four innings for the Chiefs not allowing a Cougars base runner past first base. Myron Leslie led off the Cougars 5th with a long solo homer to right field tying the game 1-1. Gwaltney recovered by striking out the next two batters to establish a new career high with nine punchouts.
In the 6th, the Cougars rallied and knocked Gwaltney from the game. Nick Blasi led off with a singled and scored on a Ryan Ruiz double. Kevin Melillo's single scored Ruiz and gave the Cougars a 3-1 lead. After a groundout, Eddie Kim doubled home Melillo and knocked Gwaltney from the game.
Newcomer Tim Layden, who joined the Chiefs earlier in the day, allowed a run in the 7th inning on a wild pitch as the Cougars extended to a 5-1 advantage. Peoria scored one against the Kane County bullpen in the 9th but never got the tying run to the plate against closer Scot Drucker.
Gwaltney took the loss falling to 2-1. The righthander set a career high with nine strikeouts but allowed seven hits and four runs in 5 1/3 innings. Webb took the win to move to 3-1. The 19 year old allowed one run on seven hits while striking out two in 6 1/3 innings.

Luis Montanez (DH) â Montanez singled in the first inning and doubled in the 6th. He was one of three Chiefs with two hits and finished 2-for-4 to extend his hit streak to four games. Notes... OF Sam Fuld was placed on the 7-day disabled list with a left shoulder contusion...Drew Larsen's eight game hit streak came to an end...The Chiefs didn't commit for the first time since May 1, a span of seven games...The start of the game was delayed 21 minutes by rain...The Chiefs now head to Beloit, WI for a four game series against the Snappers...Game one is Tuesday night at 6:30....Rockford, IL native Matt Weber will start for the Chiefs...The game can be heard on 1350 WOAM and www.peoriachiefs.com.
