The Leafs Foundation, the community service arm of the St. John's Maple Leafs organization, announced today that the Janeway Children's Hospital Foundation's "St. John's Maple Leafs Gardens" has been selected as the recipient of the Leafs Legacy Project.

The Leafs Foundation will contribute $150,000, $50,000 for each of the next three years, to the construction of the specialized playground to be located on the northeast corner of the Janeway Children's Health and Rehabilitation Centre grounds.

"The Leafs Foundation looks forward to supporting this exciting and valuable initiative that is provincial in scope and will be available for the benefit of all families in Newfoundland and Labrador for many years to come," said Murray Chaplin, Chair of the Leafs Foundation Board.

The playground will be a multi-purpose area that will incorporate several different usages suitable for a variety of ages and abilities. It will allow for use by staff with individual children and with groups of patients. In addition, parents will be able to spend time with their children in the play area or have time on their own in the quiet area

The design has taken into consideration the variable weather in our province and the varying needs of Janeway patients including rehabilitation requirements such as mobility and strength training.

Tom Kendell, Chair of the Janeway Children's Hospital Foundation said "The Janeway Foundation and the Janeway Children's Health and Rehabilitation Centre are extremely pleased and grateful to the Leafs Foundation for selecting "St. John's Maple Leafs Gardens" to be the recipient of their Legacy Project. This new play area will bring a great deal of healing and happiness to children from all parts of the province that have to visit the Janeway for many years to come."

Since its establishment in 1985, the Janeway Children's Hospital Foundation has been raising funds to help meet the medical needs of the Janeway Children's Health and Rehabilitation Centre. Thanks to the support of thousands of individuals, community groups and businesses throughout Newfoundland and Labrador and beyond, we've been able to contribute over $20,000,000 to the health and welfare of Newfoundland and Labrador children.

Since 1991, the Leafs Foundation and the Booster Club have contributed over $1,200,000 to over 120 local charities in support of community services throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
