Trenton Thunder News Release

RICHMOND, VA - The Thunder scored five times across the seventh and eighth innings on their way to an 8-3 win over the Richmond Flying Squirrels on Tuesday night at The Diamond. The Thunder (18-10) will go for a sweep of the Flying Squirrels (11-18) in the three-game series on Wednesday afternoon at 12:05pm.

With the game tied at three, Chris Gittens doubled with one out in the seventh inning. After a strikeout by Brandon Wager, Omar Carrizales tripled into the right field corner to take the lead. Angel Aguilar then singled off reliever Melvin Adon to extend the lead to 5-3.

After a scoreless inning from Domingo Acevedo, the Thunder put the game away with three more runs in the eighth. Rashad Crawford, Hoy Jun Park and Ben Ruta all found themselves on base after a hit by pitch and two walks from Adon with one out, setting up a showdown with Chris Gittens who lined a 2-2 pitch back through the middle to score two runs. After a pitching change, Wagner reached on an error by right fielder Blake Quinn to score Ruta and give the Thunder the final margin.

Will Carter finished off the game with two scoreless innings, extending his streak to 13 consecutive scoreless innings since his first appearance of the year.

Crawford started the Thunder offense with a bang, smashing a three-run homer off Brandon Lawson in the second inning. Tuesday marked the first time in Crawford's professional career that he's hit home runs in back-to-back games. All three of Crawford's home runs this season have come over the last four games.

Richmond drew the game even with a run in the fifth inning off Albert Abreu and two in the sixth. Abreu cruised through the first four innings on 60 pitches before issuing a pair of walks in a 34-pitch fifth inning that saw the Squirrels finally get on the board on a sacrifice fly by Jalen Miller. Domingo Acevedo got the final out of the inning, stranding the bases loaded, to preserve a 3-1 advantage after five innings. Johneshwy Fargas hit a two-run homer in the sixth off Acevedo to tie the game at three setting up the Thunder's late rally.

Abreu finished his day with one run allowed on five hits and four walks in 4.2 IP. The right-hander struck out four and threw 94 pitches in his fourth start of the season.

Gittens' three-hit day was his second of the season. Park, Rita and Gittens combined to go 7-for-13 with two walks in the 2-3-4 spots in the batting order. Every Thunder batter except for C Kellin Deglan had a hit in the victory.
