Another Day, Another Shutout as Erie Takes Game One from Akron, 2-0
May 7, 2019 - Eastern League (EL1)
Erie SeaWolves News Release
ERIE, PA - For the third time in the last four games, the Erie SeaWolves (15-12) shut out their opponent, this time the Akron RubberDucks (13-18), 2-0 on Tuesday night at UPMC Park. The victory marks the fourth in a row for Erie, a first in 2019 and the first four-game stretch since June 26-29 in 2018.
It was a full staff effort from the SeaWolves, as starter Gregory Soto went the first 3.0 scoreless frames, allowing one base hit and striking out two. Reliever Fernando Perez, who earned the win in his first appearance of the season, twirled the next 3.0 innings and scattered four hits while punching out two. Trent Szkutnik pitched a perfect seventh and eighth innings, and Drew Carlton polished off the final three outs.
Coming off 16 runs in their past three games, the offense was held quite for most of the night against Akron starter Tanner Tully. After five shutout frames, the bats finally pushed one across in the sixth on a Taylor Motter sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.
The other run came an inning later, after Jose Azocar led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and Rogers followed with a base hit to right. After a Cam Gibson fly ball moved Azocar to third, Sergio Alcantara grounded an infield single to shortstop to bring the score to 2-0.
Tomorrow, Erie will send RHP Alex Faedo (2-1, 3.10 ERA) to the mound against RHP Jake Paulson (2-0, 4.91 ERA) in game two of a three-game series. The game can be heard on Fox Sports Radio AM 1330 WFNN, SeaWolves.com, the TuneIn app, or also seen on MiLB.TV.
