Late Rally Falls Short As Woodies Have Ten-Game Win Streak Snapped

Kinston, N.C. - The Down East Wood Ducks scored a run in each of the final three innings, but their rally fell short, in a 4-3 loss to Myrtle Beach, Tuesday.

The Woodies (23-9) have their franchise-best ten game winning streak snapped, and lose for the first time in eight games to the Pelicans (11-21) this season.

Myrtle Beach got out to a 1-0 lead in the first. Zach Davis led off with a single, stole second, and moved to third on a mishandled pickoff throw. After a walk to Jimmy Herron, Davis came into score on a Miguel Amaya RBI single to put the Pelicans on top.

Myrtle Beach would add a run against Tyler Phillips (loss, 2-2) in the fourth. Luke Reynolds reached on a walk, and later scored on a Jhonny Bethencourt single to center, to make it 2-0.

Phillips went six innings, allowing two runs, one earned, walked two, and struck out five.

Meanwhile, Pelicans starter Erling Moreno (win, 2-4) enjoyed his best outing of the season. He went 6.1 innings, giving up a run on four hits, he walked two, and did not strike out a batter. At one point he retired 12 in a row.

The Woodies solved him for the first time in the seventh. Ryan Dorow worked a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on an RBI single from Diosbel Arias, to make it 2-1.

The Pelicans, however, answered immediately. In the eighth, they loaded the bases, and scored a pair, on a sacrifice fly from Grant Fennell, and an RBI single from Aramis Ademan.

Yohel Pozo led off the eighth inning with a solo home run, his third of the year, to get the deficit back to two. Then in the ninth, the Woodies had the first three men reach, including an RBI single from Dorow, but just before, Dorow was thrown out at second base after a single, where he represented the tying run.

The teams resume their three-game series Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. The Woodies will send lefty Jake Latz (0-1, 7.56) to the mound to square off with Pelicans righty Paul Richan (2-2, 4.18). It's education day at Grainger Stadium, presented by Lenoir Community College.
