Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Erling Moreno went a season-high 6.1 innings and allowed just one run in the Myrtle Beach Pelicans 4-3 win over the Down East Wood Ducks in the series opener on Tuesday night at Grainger Stadium.
The Pelicans (11-21) did not take long to scratch a run off of Tyler Phillips (2-2) on Tuesday night. Zach Davis led off the ballgame with a single and later scored in the inning on a single from Miguel Amaya that gave the Birds a 1-0 lead.
Myrtle Beach added to their lead and made it 2-0 in the fourth inning when Jhonny Bethencourt plated Luke Reynolds to put the Birds up a pair.
Moreno (2-4), the Birds' starter, was sensational on Tuesday. The right hander gave the Pelicans their longest start of the season as he went 6.1 innings and allowed just a run on four hits.
After six innings of being shutout by Moreno, the Woodies got on the scoreboard in the seventh inning. Ryan Dorow walked for Down East and Diosbel Arias singled him home to cut the Birds' lead to 2-1.
Myrtle Beach bolstered their lead in the top of the eighth inning, adding two runs to make it a 4-1 game. The Birds loaded the bases with just one out in the frame and Grant Fennell brought in a run on a sacrifice fly and Aramis Ademan singled home another to make it a three-run game.
Down East (23-9) cut into the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning when Yohel Pozo launched a solo homer to left to make it 4-2.
The Woodies scored another run in the bottom of the ninth inning to cut the lead to 4-3, but Ben Hecht shut the door for his second save of the season.
Myrtle Beach has now won four games in a row and they will take on the Woodies in game two of the series on Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. Paul Richan (2-2, 4.18) is scheduled to start for Myrtle Beach and Jake Latz (0-1, 7.56) will go for the Woodies.
