Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
The Albuquerque Isotopes (1-4) mounted a furious rally in the ninth inning but fell short as the Omaha Royals (4-1) held on for a 3-2 win Monday at Rosenblatt Stadium that was sealed by an eighth-inning homer by Royals right fielder Aaron Guiel. The loss is the âTopes' fourth in a row, matching the team's longest skid from a year ago.
Knotted in the eighth in a tight, 1-1 game that had been highlighted by superb pitching, Omaha second baseman Ruben Gotay slapped a one-out single to left, bringing up Guiel, who crushed a 2-0 pitch to right off of Logan Kensing to give the O-Royals a 3-1 lead.
The âTopes wouldn't quit, however, scoring a run in the top of the ninth when Jason Stokes hit a bloop two-out single to left that plated Drew Niles and cut the Royals lead to 3-2. That's as far as the âTopes would come as Omaha reliever Joel Peralta struck out Jason Wood to preserve the 3-2 triumph. Peralta (1-0) earned the win, while Kensing (0-1) took the loss for Albuquerque.
Earlier in the game, pitching was the rule, as Albuquerque left-handed starter Scott Olsen and O-Royals righty Brian Bass dueled through six innings. Olsen cruised through 6.1 frames, allowing just one unearned run in the first when Omaha leadoff batter Kerry Robinson reached on an infield single, advanced to second on a single by Gotay and scored the game's first run when âTopes catcher Tom Wilson overthrew third base while trying to catch Robinson stealing.
Albuquerque would finally get to Bass in the seventh thanks to back-to-back, two-out doubles by Wood and Matt Cepicky that tied the game at one apiece. Wood continues to swing the âTopes' hottest bat, hitting .388 through five games with five runs scored and three doubles on the young season.
The âTopes will look to regroup tomorrow when left-hander Renyel Pinto (0-0) makes his second start of the season facing Omaha's right-handed Danny Tamayo (0-0).
Albuquerque's April 14 home opener will feature a rare tribute to that night's opponent, the New Orleans Zephyrs, who have brought baseball back to the Big Easy. The special night will also include a Sports Bag giveaway to the first 3,000 fans courtesy of Sandia Resort and Casino while the following night, April 15, the Opening Weekend celebration continues with the first fireworks show of the 2006 season.
