Tucson Sidewinders News Release
Tucson, AZ - RHP Kevin Jarvis put in a quality start for the Sidewinders as they faced off against the Fresno Grizzlies for the second game of a four-game set. Fresno struck first, playing small ball to move CF Dan Ortmeier around the bases. Ortmeier singled, stole second and moved to third on a base hit. He scored on a sac fly from the bat of SS Tomas De La Rosa.
Despite giving up the early lead, Jarvis was in command, striking out 5 batters and walking none. He gave up 5 hits and 2 runs over 7 innings, and left with the lead, but the Sidewinders pen was unable to hold onto it for him. In the 3rd frame he even helped his own cause by knocking in 3B Kenny Perez on a single through the hole at second, continuing the early season hitting success of Sidewinders pitchers.
Fresno retook the lead in the 6th when CF Jerry Gil and LF Scott Hairston miscommunicated on a fly to shallow left-center. Gil played the ball, but bumped with Hairston just enough to delay the throw home, allowing 2B Kevin Frandsen to plate their second run. Tucson tied it back up in the bottom half of the inning when SS Stephen Drew hit his third home run of the year, a solo shot to right.
The Sidewinders gave Jarvis the lead in the 7th when Perez singled to short, scoring Gil. Interim manager Lorenzo Bundy turned to RHP Jeff Bajenaru in the 8th to try and close out the game for Tucson. Bajenaru struggled with his control, walking 3 batters and giving up 4 hits on the way to a blown save loss. He struck out 1 batter, but gave up three runs. The first two came in the 8th off the bat of an Ortmeier single. 2B Kevin Frandsen added the third run off Bajenaru in the 9th inning when he singled up the middle.
LHP Michael Tejara got the win for Fresno, pitching 1 1/3 innings, giving up 3 hits, an unearned run and striking out 2. RHP Merkin Valdez got the save by pitching a perfect 9th.
The bulk of the 4,591 fans in attendance were students from Tucson area schools involved in the D.A.R.E./G.R.E.A.T. program.
