Late Inning Heroics Do the Trick in Game Four
August 5, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Columbus Clippers News Release
As they had in each of the first three games of their series, the Columbus Clippers and Louisville Bats went down to the wire in the series finale this evening at Huntington Park.
While the prior three contests had been pitching-heavy, the teams battled it out with the bats tonight, with Columbus coming away with a 9-8 victory.
The Bats started the scoring in the first inning, when Gabriel Guerrero knocked his third homerun of the series, a solo shot off Adam Wilk, over the left-field wall to give his team a 1-0 lead.
The Clippers bounced back in the home half as Drew Maggi took Louisville starter Justin Nicolino deep to lead off the game for Columbus. They then reeled off back to back singles to put runners on the corners for Adam Rosales. He grounded a ball back to Nicolino, who decided to go home, but the throw was bad, allowing a run to score for a 2-1 Clippers' lead.
Louisville tied things with a bases-loaded double-play ball in the top of the third.
Columbus broke things open in the bottom of the third when Bobby Bradley ripped an RBI double down the right field line to give the Clippers a 3-2 advantage. Yu Chang then followed with a two-run single, making it 5-2.
The Bats stayed close in the fourth, though, when Josh VanMeter brought his squad within two on a sac-fly.
Brandon Barnes charged things up in the bottom of the inning with a controversial three-run shot of Nicolino to extend the Clippers' lead to 8-3. There was confusion on whether the ball was fair or foul, as it crept over the left field foul pole and landed well-foul, but the umpires agreed on the fair call. Nicolino was ejected after arguing the call.
His team would rebound in the seventh, however. Brian O'Grady started the scoring with a two-run single, which D.J. Peterson backed up with a two-run double. Trailing 8-7, Tim Federowicz, making his Louisville debut, then doubled in one more to tie things at 8-8.
Yandy Diaz came through for the Clippers in the eighth with an RBI single, scoring Greg Allen for a 9-8 lead.
The Clippers will have tomorrow off before traveling to Durham to face off against the Bulls on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
