Bisons Rally in Ninth for 6-5 Win

The Bisons rallied from three runs down in the ninth inning to pick up the 6-5 victory over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, Sunday afternoon from PNC Field in Moosic, PA. Anthony Alford, Richard Urena and Tim Lopes all drove in runs in the comeback effort, giving Buffalo just their third win when trailing after eight innings this season.

Trailing 5-2 in the ninth, the rally started when Vladimir Guerrero Jr. led off the frame with a walk, his eighth in his first six games at the Triple-A level. Danny Jansen and Dalton Pompey followed with sharp singles to load the bases against RailRiders reliever Tommy Kahnle.

Two batters later, Alford ripped a two-run double down the left field line to pull the Herd to within a run. Urena then battled back from an 0-2 count to smash a line-drive single to center off reliever Joe Harvey to tie the game. The ball was hit too hard for Alford to score from second, but Lopes wasted little time in giving the Bisons the lead. The second baseman hit the first pitch he saw to deep centerfield, allowing Alford to trot home on the sacrifice with the game-winning run.

Buffalo trailed for virtually the entire game after Scranton/Wilkes-Barre plated two in the second inning and got dominating work from 23-year old Michael King in his Triple-A debut. The righty allowed just one run on three hits in seven innings, yielding just a Rowdy Tellez home run in his final inning of work.

The RailRiders scored two in the seventh to take a 4-1 lead before Lopes homered in the eighth to close to within 4-2. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's solo run in their half of the eighth was not enough insurance as the Bisons rallied for the win.

Brandon Cumpton started for the Bisons, being activated by the team just prior to the game after being optioned by Toronto. The righty allowed two runs in 5.2 innings of work. Tim Mayza (4-2) got the win for Buffalo in relief while Justin Shafer came on to strike out former Bison Gio Urshela to end the contest for the second consecutive game. Shafer now has 12 saves on the season.

With the win, the Bisons earned the 2-1 series win against the RailRiders. The Herd will now have Monday off before opening up a six-game homestand against Gwinnett and Toledo with Polish Heritage Night on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m.
