Gwinnett Stripers News Release
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The Gwinnett Stripers fell to the Norfolk Tides 7-4 Sunday at Coolray Field, ending the team's four-game winning streak.
Tied 3-3 after six innings following a quality start by Touki Toussaint, Chad Bell gave up back-to-back doubles to Cedric Mullins and Breyvic Valera in the seventh for the go-ahead run. Norfolk scored three more runs off the combination of Bell and Fernando Salas in the eighth.
Gwinnett had given Toussaint a 2-0 lead in the first with a Dustin Peterson RBI single and a Carlos Franco RBI double off Luis Ortiz, making his Triple-A debut and his first start in the Baltimore organization after a trade from Milwaukee on July 31.
Toussaint allowed all three of his runs in the third inning. With one out, he walked Valera and gave up an RBI triple to D.J. Stewart, who then scored on a wild pitch. Luis Sardinas later hit an RBI single for the third run.
It remained 3-2 Tides until the fourth, when Alex Jackson led off with a 411-foot home run (2) out to left that tied the game.
After taking the lead in the seventh, Norfolk added three runs in the eighth. Bell gave up a leadoff double to Drew Dosch and was replaced by Salas. His first pitch went to the backstop, allowing Dosch to score. With two outs, Mike Yastrzemski singled and was followed by an Armando Araiza two-run homer (1) to make it 7-3.
The Stripers added a run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI groundout by Jackson, but they couldn't muster a rally.
Toussaint picked up a no-decision for his 6.0 innings of working, allowing seven hits, three runs (two earned) and three walks with eight strikeouts. Bell (L, 2-3) allowed three hits and two runs over 1.1 innings. Adam McCreery struck out two in a perfect frame in his Triple-A debut.
Ortiz labored through 5.0 innings, allowing eight hits, three runs and four walks, but kept the Stripers in check. Former Gwinnett pitcher Sean Gilmartin (W, 2-0) went 2.1 innings with a run allowed. Tim Melville (S, 1) worked a perfect 1.2 innings to lock it down for Norfolk.
Jackson finished the day 2-for-4 with the homer and two RBIs. Phil Gosselin was 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored. Peterson went 1-for-4, extending his team-best on-base streak to 21 games.
Yastrzemski was 3-for-4 with a run for the Tides (59-52), while four other players had multi-hit efforts.
The Stripers (52-58) have Monday off before they travel to Buffalo to open a three-game series with the Bisons. Tuesday's game at Coca-Cola Field starts at 7:05 p.m. Left-hander Kolby Allard (6-4, 2.80 ERA) is scheduled for Gwinnett, fresh off his Major League debut on July 31. The Buffalo starter has yet to be announced. Tony Schiavone will have the play-by-play call on 97.7 and 93.5 FM "The Other Side of the River" beginning at 6:35 p.m.
