Indianapolis Indians News Release
TOLEDO, OHIO - The Indians saw an early 5-0 lead slip away through the middle innings en route to a 7-6 loss and four-game series split with the Mud Hens on Sunday night. Wyatt Mathisen, who set a career high with four RBI in Friday night's 12-7 victory, matched that total less than 48 hours later in the losing effort.
Toledo (58-54) pulled within 3.5 games of Indianapolis (62-51) in the IL West with the comeback, the final three runs coming in a crucial spot in the sixth. After allowing two runs in the fifth that made it a 5-4 ballgame, Montana DuRapau couldn't get through the next inning unscathed. The Mud Hens loaded the bases with two outs to force a pitching change, and Damien Magnifico surrendered a bases-clearing double to Christin Stewart that proved to be the difference.
Zac Houston (H, 2) struck out three over the next two innings, and former Tribe reliever Johnny Barbato (S, 8) worked around a two-out bloop double by Pablo Reyes in the ninth for the save.
The Indians went up early against southpaw Tyler Alexander, scoring two in the second on a Jacob Stallings RBI single and RBI groundout by Mathisen.
Two innings later, Mathisen pushed Indy's lead to 5-0 with a two-out, three-run blast to left-center field.
The home team chipped away against Tribe starter Clay Holmes, plating a pair in the fourth on a Grayson Greiner double.
Once Toledo inched with one, Eric Wood extended the Indians' advantage back to two at 6-4 with a single that scored Max Moroff in the sixth.
DuRapau (L, 1-1) was charged with five earned runs in 1.2 innings of relief. Warwick Saupold (W, 2-0) yielded one run on four hits over 2.0 frames to earn the win.
Magnifico posted 2.1 scoreless innings to run his career-high scoreless streak to 19.1 innings, the longest by a Tribe pitcher in 2018.
Following an off day on Monday, the Indians begin a six-game homestand against two IL North Division foes on Tuesday night, starting with three against Lehigh Valley. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. EDT. Right-hander Tyler Eppler (11-5, 3.56) will face IronPigs righty Enyel De Los Santos (9-4, 2.51) in the opener.
