Bats Fall in Extras to Clippers

August 5, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Louisville Bats News Release

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Despite tremendous offensive performances from Brian O'Grady and D.J. Peterson, the Louisville Bats (50-59) fell, 3-1, to the Columbus Clippers (57-54) Saturday evening at Huntington Park. The loss snapped Louisville's winning streak at four and marked its fifth extra-innings loss this season.

Reliever Domingo Tapia (3-5) picked up the loss while Clippers pitcher Josh Martin (2-0) earned the win. In his debut start for the Bats, Lucas Sims allowed four hits and one run with six strikeouts over five innings of work. In relief, Tanner Rainey was especially strong, turning in a hitless effort of 1.1 innings late in the game. Clippers starter Mitch Talbot tossed five innings, allowing three hits and two runs.

The Clippers struck first in the bottom of the first as Adam Rosales homered to left. Sims settled in afterward, striking five consecutive batters in the second and third innings. The Bats offense was held in check through the early going with the lone hit coming off a single by Josh VanMeter in the third.

Finally, in the fourth, Louisville broke through as O'Grady's fly ball barely cleared the left field fence, knotting the game at one. Columbus nearly answered in the bottom half with runners on the corner with one out, but Sims was able to induce a double play that kept the score tied.

Boosted by the timely play, Peterson put the Bats ahead in the fifth with a towering home run to right that exited the park onto the street. The blast marked Peterson's 100th career home run. Once again in the bottom half, the Clippers placed two on base with one out, but trouble was evaded with two quick outs, closing out the night for Sims. The Clippers built threats in the following two innings yet remained unable to score on Louisville pitching.

In the top of the ninth, Hernan Iribarren's two-out double kept the inning alive, allowing Peterson to tally his second RBI of the night with a single to center. The insurance run bolstered the Louisville lead before troubles arose in the bottom half. Closer Kevin Quackenbush entered the game and surrendered consecutive walks. With two outs in the frame, Greg Allen brought both home with a double to center, notching Quackenbush's third blown save of the season.

In the top of the 10th, Chadwick Tromp opened at second, eventually moving to third on a dropped third strike. Tromp eventually came around to score on McElroy's two-out double to left. Tapia entered in the bottom half and allowed consecutive one-out singles that gave Columbus the win.

The Bats and Clippers will close out their four-game set on Sunday at 4:05 p.m. Southpaw Justin Nicolino (5-6, 4.49) will start for Louisville with left-hander Adam Wilk (4-8, 4.35) countering for Columbus.
