Late Allen Homer Lifts Jumbo Shrimp to Victory

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A late Austin Allen home run elevated the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp over the Norfolk Tides 3-2 Wednesday night at 121 Financial Ballpark. The victory matches the Jumbo Shrimp's season-high winning streak at five games.

Jacksonville (51-57, 20-15) took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the eighth frame. Troy Johnston drew a one-out walk. Following a strikeout, Allen (20) homered off Norfolk (68-41, 20-15) reliever Bryan Baker (0-1) to give Jacksonville a 3-2 advantage.

Norfolk got on the board first in the top of the second inning when Josh Lester (17) hit a solo shot.

The Tide tacked on another run in the third frame. Connor Norby led off with a walk, which was followed by a Heston Kjerstad double. Joey Ortiz singled, plating Norby, putting Norfolk up, 2-0.

The Jumbo Shrimp answered in the bottom of the fourth inning. Garret Hampson and Troy Johnston laced back-to-back singles with one out. Peyton Burdick was hit by a pitch to load the bases and a sacrifice fly by Allen plated Hampson, making it a one-run ballgame.

Austin Roberts (1-0) earned the win in relief, tossing two scoreless innings. Richard Rodriguez also fired 2.1 shutout innings in relief of Bryan Hoeing, who ceded two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts in 4.2 innings.

Jacksonville and Norfolk continue their series Thursday at 7:05 p.m. LHP Daniel Castano (1-0, 2.83 ERA) gets the nod for the Jumbo Shrimp against Tides LHP Cade Povich (0-0, 5.40 ERA). Coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on Bally Live, MiLB.tv., ESPN 690, and espn690.com.
