Lake Erie's four game winning streak snapped in 9-2 loss

WASHINGTON, Pa. - Casey Barnes silenced the Lake Erie offense on Friday night at Consol Energy Park, holding the Crushers to just a pair of hits, as the Washington Wild Things took the series opener from the Crushers, 9-2.

The loss for the Crushers (39-31) snaps a four game win streak, and marks their third loss on the road in their last four games. The win for Washington (29-40) was their third in their last four against the Crushers.

Barnes (4-5) retired the first 13 batters he faced, before walking Andrew Davis on five pitches with one out in the fifth inning. He took a no hit bid into the seventh, where J.C. Figueroa wrecked it with a leadoff single.

The seventh inning ended the no hit bid, and put the Crushers on the board. Figueroa scored moments later after Jason Taylor singled to center. On the base hit, Darian Sandford booted the ball, allowing Figueroa to score. Taylor made his way to second on the play, and scored on Davis's groundout.

Outside of the seventh, the Crushers offense was held in check.

While Lake Erie's offense was baffled by Barnes, the Washington offense was red hot, and scored in all but three innings.

Sandford scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first, on A.J. Nunziato's groundout. He doubled with one out in the third, and came home after Paul Fagan (6-5) issued three straight two out free passes. The third walk in that equation was issued to Andrew Heck, which brought Sandford in.

Shain Stoner belted a base hit to start the fourth inning, and scored on Sandford's groundout. The Wild Things added two more in the fifth inning, before exploding for four in the eighth.

Heck and Stoner drove in runs with base hits in the fifth inning, before they poured it on in the eighth. Brad Agustin, Gus Benusa and Mark Samuelson all recorded RBI singles, and Nunziato drove in a run on his second double of the game.

Barnes tossed eight strong innings, and allowed just a pair of unearned runs on two hits with the strikeouts to beat the Crushers for the second time this season. Fagan lasted four innings, and was tagged for three runs, two earned on three hits. He walked four, and fanned five on the night.

Lake Erie registered just a pair of hits on the night, getting singles from Taylor and Figueroa. Davis was the only other Crusher to reach, drawing a one out walk in the fifth inning.

The Crushers will continue their three game series with the Washington Wild Things at Consol Energy Park on Saturday night. Left hander Josh Hungerman (0-0, 1.17) will start for the Crushers, and the Wild Things will counter with right hander Gary Lee (4-3, 2.73). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
