Joliet Slammers News Release

JOLIET SLAMMERS (27-42) @ SCHAUMBURG BOOMERS (41-28)

Friday, August 3- - 6:30 p.m. CT

Schaumburg Boomers Stadium - Schaumburg, IL

Game #70 - Road Game #34 (27-42), (14-19)

RHP #4 Steven Maxwell (5-7, 4.05 ERA) vs. RHP #28 Matt Kuna (2-2, 3.38 ERA)

Last time out...

Joliet lost 8-6 last night. Evansville got on the board in the home half of the second when Steven Marino hit a two-run home run, and followed up with another pair in the third on a double by DeAngelo Mack for the 4-0 lead. Joliet began to claw back into the ballgame in the fourth on a two-RBI double by Eric McGee to cut the lead in half. But Evansville struck again in the fifth when Nick Schwaner went yard on a three-run bomb to make it 7-2. The Slammers added runs in the latter innings off RBIs from Erik Lis, David Fox, and David Christensen. The Otters tacked another on in the eighth to give the game its 8-6 final score. The rains came in the bottom of the eighth inning at Bosse Field, and the game was finalized, giving the Otters the sweep. Jim Schult was shaky in his start, surrendering seven runs through five frames, while Dustin Quattrocchi and Geoff Brown tossed in relief.

For Starters...

Steven Maxwell is coming off a tough luck loss to the Windy City ThunderBolts on July 29. He went seven innings, giving up two runs on seven hits, walking nobody and striking out four in a 3-0 loss for Joliet. In Maxwell's seven losses this season, the Slammers are averaging exactly two runs per game and have been shutout in three of seven defeats. This is the third time Maxwell has faced Schaumburg in 2012 and he currently sports a 1-1 record with a 3.00 ERA against the Boomers. Maxwell put up outstanding numbers at Division One powerhouse Texas Christian University and got drafted twice, once by the Minnesota Twins, and once by the Chicago Cubs. Maxwell's junior season at TCU saw him tally an 11-2 record with a 2.70 ERA. Maxwell tossed 103.1 innings that season and struck out 93 batters while only walking 34 in 18 starts. He was a 2010 2nd-team Louisville Slugger all-American, the 2010 Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Year, a 2010 1st-team All-Mountain West Conference selection, a 2010 ABCA 2nd-team All-Midwest Region selection and he made the 2010 NCAA Fort Worth Regional All-Tournament Team. His pitching helped lead TCU to the College World Series. Maxwell was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 12th round of the 2010 draft but elected to return to TCU for his senior season. Injuries shortened Maxwell's senior campaign but the right-hander still went 5-1 with a 3.13 ERA in 11 starts. He was named to the All-Mountain West 2nd Team at the end of the season. Maxwell finished his collegiate career with a 21-5 record and a 3.43 ERA. He was chosen by the Chicago Cubs in the 37th round of the 2011 draft.

Against the Boomers...

Joliet is currently 3-6 against Schaumburg in 2012. Abel Nieves leads the way with a .406 batting average against the Boomers.

The wrong kind of streak...

The Slammers are currently in the midst of the longest losing streak in franchise history as they've dropped five in a row.

A down season...

The Slammers have 42 losses on the year, more than their entire regular season loss total (40) of 2011.

Road woes...

The Slammers have lost six in a row away from Silver Cross Field, their longest road losing streak ever.

Leading after six...

Despite their struggles in 2012, Joliet is still 17-4 when leading after six innings.

Save me...

Last season Joliet native Ryan Quigley set the Frontier League's single-season record with 28 saves. Quigley is now in the Padres organization but former Angels farmhand Amalio Diaz has picked up right where Quigley left off. Diaz is second in the league with 16 saves in 17 attempts.

Error indicator...

The Slammers are 9-30 in games when they make an error. They are 18-12 in games when they do not.
