August 3, 2012 - Frontier League (FL)
Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums got 4.2 scoreless innings of relief from Mike Devine and Jake Sabol, but the Southern Illinois Miners got just enough offense before the bullpen entered the game to scrape across a 4-1 win over the Beach Bums in front of 4,506 fans at Wuerfel Park.

The Miners tallied the first run of the game in the third inning on a single by Jake Kaase to plate Cannon Lester who had singled two batters previous. In the fourth, two more runs scored for Southern Illinois on a sac fly by Chad Maddox and a single by Carlos Mendez, driving home Ken Gregory and Chris Anderson who had doubled and singled respectively. The Miners final run came in the fifth on a catcher's interference call.

Traverse City would plate a run in the seventh as with two out, Jose Vargas drove in his league leading 73rd run of the year, plating Ryan Still who had walked. For Still, it was his his 78th walk of the season, breaking the single-season Beach Bums' record, previously set by Chase Burch who walked 77 times in 2010.

That was all the offense TC could muster, however, Cody Hall and three relievers held the Beach Bums to six hits, three of them coming from Sean Gusrang. Hall (6-0) earned the win with six shutout innings. Brandon Cunniff notched his first save for Southern Illinois, his fifth of the year overall. Brooks Belter (8-2) took the loss giving up three earned runs in 4.1 innings.
