
Miners' Arms Contain Beach Bums

Traverse City, MI - Southern Illinois Miner starter Cody Hall earned his sixth win of the season by pitching six innings and guiding the Miners to a 4-1 victory over the Traverse City Beach Bums at Wuerfel Park. With the win, the Miners are now 10-0 in all of Cody Hall's starts this season. The Miners also trail the Beach Bums by three games in the Eastern Division.
The Miners struck first in the top of the third inning off Beach Bums starter Brooks Belter as Jake Kaase hit a RBI single with two outs to give the Miners a 1-0 lead. The Miners scored two more runs off Belter in the top of the fourth inning as Chad Maddox hit a sacrifice fly and Carlos Mendez provided a RBI single to give the Miners a 3-0 lead.
The Miners added another run in the top of the fifth inning off Belter as Chad Maddox hit a ball to right field with one out and the bases loaded to score Jake Kaase who was on third base. The run came through on an error by right fielder Sean Gusrang and the Miners took a 4-0 lead.
Cody Hall gave up four hits, three singles by Sean Gusrang and a single by designated hitter Chase Burch. He walked two and struck out two in his outing. The only run of the game the Beach Bums scored was a RBI double by third baseman Jose Vargas with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning off Miners reliever Gabriel Shaw.
Steven Grife pitched a scoreless eighth inning, only giving up one hit. Newly acquired reliever Brandon Cunniff picked up his first save as a Miner, as he struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the 4-1 lead for the Miners. With the win, the Miners improve to 41-29 on the season.
Tomorrow night the Miners and Beach Bums will play game two of the three game set. First pitch will get underway at Wuerfel Park at 6:05 pm. The Heartland Regional Medical Center Pregame Show with Mike Ventola on the Miners Radio Network will get underway at 5:45 pm.
