Evansville wins 4-1

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, struck first but could not hold the lead in a 4-1 loss to the Evansville Otters on Friday night at Bosse Field.

The CornBelters scored first with a run in the fifth inning after stranding six runners on base in the first four frames when Steven Felix drew a two-out walk and scored on a double by Ernie Banks Jr. to the left center wall.

The Otters answered with two outs in the botttom of the fifth when Greg Fontenot drew a walk and scored on a bloop to the left field line by Nick Schwaner. DeAngelo Mack followed with a home run that crept over the left field fence to give the Otters a 3-1 lead.

Evansville added an unearned run in the seventh to build their lead to 4-1 when Fontenot reached on an error to lead off the inning, went to third on a base hit by Luis Parache and scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Schwaner.

Matt Crim (3-7) won his second straight start with seven innings of four-hit work, with four walks and four strikeouts. Eric Massingham pitched the ninth inning for his 19th save. Tyler Stovall (1-8) took the loss with a six-inning start, also giving up four hits while walking six and striking out five.

The CornBelters continue the series with Saturday's middle game, as Normal right-hander Brendon Smith (2-3, 2.73 ERA) is projected to start on the mound against Evansville lefty Adam Champion (4-4, 2.90 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. with the WJBC.com pre-game at 6:20.
