Joliet Slammers News Release

(Schaumburg, IL) - Steven Maxwell (6-7) turned in a phenomenal outing and the Joliet Slammers (28-42) shutout the Schaumburg Boomers (41-29) by a final score of 2-0 Friday night.

The rookie out of TCU hasn't been getting a lot of run support in 2012 but he didn't need much in the series opener with Schaumburg. Maxwell went eight scoreless innings, giving up only three hits, walking four and striking out three. The victory was Maxwell's sixth of the year, the most on the team.

Joliet's defense was excellent on Friday as well. David Christensen made a spectacular diving catch in the first inning and doubled off the runner at first base to end the frame. Kyle Maunus made a diving stop of a Frank Pfister grounder in the sixth and fired a strike to first for the last out of the inning. Then in the eighth inning it was Patrick Norris making an over-the-shoulder catch in deep center field to rob Karexon Sanchez of extra bases.

Offensively the Slammers finally got on the board in the seventh inning against Matt Kuna (2-3). With one out, Josh Lyon singled and David Fox ripped a pitch over the left field fence for his fourth home run of the season. Fox had left the bases loaded with a ground-out in the second but the long ball more than made up for the earlier out.

Kuna took the loss as he went six and a third innings, giving up two runs on eight hits, walking one and striking out five.

Amalio Diaz nailed down his 17 th save of the year with a perfect ninth inning.

With the win the Slammers broke their franchise long five-game losing streak and shutout Schaumburg for the second time this season.

Joliet is back in action Saturday night as rookie right-hander Jacob Sanchez (3-1, 2.27 ERA) gets the start. First pitch is at 6:00 p.m. and all the action can be heard on AM 1340 WJOL and online at www.wjol.com .
