Rascals Shut out at Gateway

River City Rascals News Release

O'Fallon, Mo. - In the first game following the trade of two-year teammate and 2012 closer Brandon Cunniff that very well could signal the beginning of the end for the Rascals and a potential late-season playoff run, River City backed up that feeling Friday night against the division rival Gateway Grizzlies in a 9-0 loss that featured just five hits, all singles, from a lineup that posted nine runs on eight hits in a single inning last night.

River City went in order in the first before the Grizzlies launched their first of four homeruns on the night to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the frame off Rascal starter Preston Vancil (4-8) who allowed six runs in five innings in the loss. The Rascals strung together three hits in the second inning but Doug Sanders was thrown out at the plate and River City came away with nothing.

A solo homerun started the second and fifth innings as Gateway stretched their lead to 4-0 before tacking on two more runs in the fifth for a 6-0 lead.

The Rascals (34-36) were held to two hits the rest of the way as the Grizzlies (41-29) added a second solo shot from Landon Hernandez in the sixth and two more runs in the seventh.

Coupled with the Schaumburg loss, the Grizzlies move into a tie for first place in the west division standings with the win over their rivals to even the season series at 5-5.

River City and Gateway resume the series tomorrow with first pitch set for 7:05 at GCS Ballpark. You can hear the action live at www.westplexnewstalk.com or locally on Westplex News-Talk 1280 AM.
