Washington Wild Things News Release

WASHINGTON, PA - Casey Barnes dominated through eight innings for the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, as they opened up a weekend series with Lake Erie with a 5-2 win.

Barnes' final line read: seven innings pitched giving up two runs on two hits while striking out three and walking one.

The right-hander didn't allow a base runner until the fifth inning, when he issued a walk to Andrew Davis, and held the Crusher's hitless until the top of the seventh.

Barnes faced 27 batters, and made his living Friday night by working ahead, throwing a first-pitch strike to 21 of those 27. He also induced 12 ground ball outs.

Washington grabbed the lead in the bottom of the first and never trailed, striking methodically in the first, third, fourth, fifth and eighth innings.

Darian Sandford led off the first inning with a walk and then swiped second, his 46th stolen base of the season. Sandford came the rest of the way around to score on groundouts by Gus Benusa and A.J. Nunziato.

The Wild Things loaded the bases in the third, and scraped across another run when Andrew Heck worked a seven-pitch walk to plate Sandford, the second run of the game.

Sandford contributed to another Wild Things' run the following inning, scoring Shain Stoner on a groundout in to Crusher's pitcher, Fagan.

The Wild Things continued to jump on the Crushers pitching staff, striking for two more in the fifth. Andrew Heck singled in A.J. Nunziato to make it 4-0. Nunziato led off the frame with a double to get into scoring position. Two batters later, Stoner ripped a single up the middle to score Samuelson from third. For the evening, Stoner went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Lake Erie made it a game in the top of the seventh, getting two runs to bring the score to 5-2, but the Wild Things added a few insurance runs on RBI singles by Brad Agustin and Gus Benusa, and then an RBI double by Nunziato in the eighth.

Samuelson added another RBI single to bring the final score to 9-2.

The Wild Things return to action for game two of the series tomorrow night at 7:05. Gary Lee will be on the mound for the Wild Things against Josh Hungerman for Lake Erie. Tickets are still available for tomorrow night's contest and throughout the homestand by visiting the CONSOL Energy Park box office, at www.washingtonwildthings.com or by calling 1-866- WILD.
