August 3, 2012 - Frontier League (FL)
Rockford RiverHawks News Release
CRESTWOOD, Ill. - Mike Recchia broke a Frontier League record with his fifth shutout of the season as the Windy City ace blanked the Rockford RiverHawks, 4-0, on Friday at Standard Bank Stadium.
Recchia, who leads the league in wins and strikeouts, scattered seven hits, struck out seven and walked three over 130 pitches, 82 for strikes. Recchia (10-2) recorded his second straight shutout and broke the season record of four set by Ben Ally of Washington and Chris Spigner of Richmond in 2003 and matched by Tony Casoli of Traverse City in 2006.
Rockford starter Cody Hallahan scattered three hits over six shutout innings, but was not involved in the decision. The Rockford bullpen gave up four unearned runs. Nelson Curry (0-1), who gave up three in the seventh, took the loss.
Recchia did not allow a RiverHawk past second base until the sixth inning. In the top of the seventh, with the game still scoreless, two on and two out, Greg Van Horn singled to center field, but Windy City center fielder Bob Glover threw out runner Jet Butler at the plate to end the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, Travis Weaver led off with a bunt single and moved to second base on Mike Torres' hit to left. Chris Wade attempted a sacrifice bunt, but Curry overthrew first base to load the bases on the error. Glover hit a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Weaver and Ryan Cuneo followed with a single to right to drive in Torres and Wade. The ThunderBolts added a run in the eighth.
Rockford, which was shut out, 1-0, on Thursday at Lake Erie, has matched a season-high with a five-game losing streak.
The series continues at 6:05 p.m. Saturday.
The RiverHawks' next home game is at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, when they host Florence. Kids eat free on Tuesday nights with paid admission.
