Evansville Otters News Release

Good evening,

The Lake Erie Crushers rallied back from an early deficit to top the Evansville Otters 8-4 on Wednesday night.

Matt Crim was on the mound for Evansville but he allowed a leadoff single in the bottom of the first and then a two-run home run against outfielder Daniel Bowman.

Down 2-0, the Otters surged back for the lead in the top of the second inning. Catcher John Nester evened up the score with a two run home run to left field and first baseman Nick Schwaner gave Evansville the advantage with an RBI double to the gap.

Crim held the lead over the next few innings, retiring eight straight batters at one point. A leadoff solo home run from designated hitter Ricardo Lizcano tied the game and infielder Andrew Davis hit a three run go-ahead home run later in the inning. Crim would leave the contest after the next hit.

Reliever Kyle Wormington then entered the game for Evansville, escaped further trouble in the fifth but surrendered two additional runs in the sixth.

The Otters would trail 8-3 into the eight inning. That was when Evansville loaded the bases for shortstop Ryan Kresky. Reliever Jordan Wellander would force in a run by walking Kresky and was then removed from the game. Righty Brad Duffy then came in to face the tying run at the plate and he induced outfielder John Schultz into an inning-ending groundout.

Evansville would be unable to score in the ninth inning as Lake Erie wins the game 8-4.

The Otters are 15-7 this season after the defeat as the Crushers improve to 10-13 with the win.

Middendorf (3-1) earns the win, after yielding just three runs in 7.0 innings. Crim (1-2) takes the loss, going 4.2 innings and allowing six runs. Nester and infielder Frank Martinez both had two hits each in the Otters loss.

The Evansville Otters will send left-hander Matt Zielinski (2-0, 1.58 ERA) to the mound on Thursday for the possible series win. He will be matched up against righty Matt Smith (2-0, 3.56 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm EDT.
