NORMAL - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, gave up two big late innings and lost 7-2 to the Washington Wild Things on Wednesday night at the Corn Crib.

The scoring finally started in the fifth inning when Wild Things first baseman Stewart Ijames launched a home run to the left field lawn.

The CornBelters evened the game in the sixth when Pat McKenna led off with a double and scored on two fielder's choices with the RBI going to T.J. Gavlik.

The Wild Things quickly broke the tie in the seventh with a lead-off single by Jim Vahalik, who scored from first base on a double to left center by A.J. Nunziato. Shain Stoner then singled in Nunziato with two outs to give the Things a 3-1 lead.

The Belters cut the margin to 3-2 in the eighth with a lead-off double from Romulo Ruiz, who moved to third on an infield hit by T.J. Gavlik and scored on a fielder's choice by Matt Wright.

Washington put the game out of reach in the ninth with four runs with the help of a walk and a pair of errors.

Ryan Demmin suffered his first loss to fall to 2-1 while Shawn Blackwell (2-2) earned the win in relief. The loss combined with a Gateway win drops the CornBelters into second place in the Frontier League West Division a half-game behind the Grizzlies.

The homestand concludes on a Thirst Quenching Thursday at the Corn Crib with a 7 p.m. first pitch against the Wild Things.

THE NIBLET : The CornBelters are still seeking host families for the 2013 season. The "Host Family Program" provides players with a home away from home. It enables them to live with a family, couple or individual in the Bloomington-Normal area. It is derived from a variety of factors from a player's standpoint. Such factors include: the difficulty in finding a lease for just several months, the possibility of playing for the CornBelters for a limited time and/or the limited salaries that accompany professional baseball at this level of play.
