
Miners Edged out by Aviators

Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners were defeated by the Rockford Aviators on Wednesday night at Rent One Park. Miners starting pitcher Richard Sullivan received the loss giving up five runs in six innings. He gave up eight hits and walked two batters. Sullivan struck out five batters.
Despite Rockford leading 1-0 after the top of the first inning, the Miners took a 2-1 lead heading into the top of the second inning. Short stop Tyler Stubblefield provided a RBI single and left fielder Carlos Colmenares hit a sacrifice fly to score Stubblefield. The Miners added another run in the bottom of the second inning off Aviators starter Nick Anderson as center fielder Tyler Hall hit a RBI single to score first baseman Phil Butler.
The Aviators scored three runs off Sullivan to take a 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth inning and added another run in the top of the sixth inning. Southern Illinois trimmed Rockford's lead to 5-4 as catcher Mario Mercedes hit a RBI single to score right fielder Ken Gregory with two outs. Rockford capped their scoring by adding a run in the top of the seventh inning.
Miners reliever Hayden Simpson pitched for the first time since his start on May 28th against Traverse City. He pitched 1/3 of an inning in the seventh and allowed an unearned run. Dayne Quist pitched 1 2/3 innings and Brandon Cunniff struck out two batters in one inning.
The Miners and Aviators will play for the series victory tomorrow night at Rent One Park. Blake Nation (2-0) will be opposed by Drew Rucinski (1-3). First pitch is at 7:05 pm.
