Joliet Slammers News Release
(Joliet, IL) - Jerod Yakubik recorded only one hit in Tuesday's game against River City, but was the biggest hit of the night for Joliet.
Yakubik's RBI single up the middle pushed across the winning run for Joliet (10-12) who beat the Rascals (8-13) with the walk-off winner by a score of 5-4.
The comeback victory for Joliet marks the largest comeback of the year for the Slammers, who scored three runs in the ninth inning.
River City only trailed in the game when it mattered at the end, as the Rascals scored first with one run touching home in the third inning.
Scott Dalrymple led off the inning with a double and Curran Redal hit him home on an RBI single giving River City a 1-0 lead.
After a scoreless fourth inning, Joliet tied the ballgame in the home half of the fifth inning on a lead-off solo home run by Javan Williams. It was Williams' first long ball of the season and it would be the only run the Slammers would score in the inning as Joliet left the bases loaded to end the frame.
The tie did not last long as River City re-took the lead in the top of the sixth inning, scoring two runs in the frame. Redal and Evan Crawford hit back-to-back singles to start the inning, then Phil Wunderlich drove Redal home on a RBI single.
Crawford advanced to third and scored in the inning on an error by third baseman Grant DeBruin, making it a 3-1 Rascals lead.
Both sides would add one in the seventh inning making it a 4-2 game and after a scoreless eighth inning and River City held in check in the top of the ninth, Joliet got busy in the bottom of the last inning.
Williams and Marquis Riley started the inning with back-to-back singles, and then Grant DeBruin reached on a fielder's choice with Riley putout at second base putting runners at the corners with one out.
The pinch hitter Nate Wilder struck out making it two down with still two runners on with Michael Wing stepping to the plate.
Wing drove both runners home, tying the game on a two-run double, setting up Yakubik who picked up the game winning RBI single up the middle of the infield, and the Slammers won for the first time on the walk-off this year, 5-4.
Justin Erasmus (1-1) got the victory out of the bullpen for Joliet.
Shawn Kale (0-0) picks up his first start of the year in the second game of the series on Wednesday, as he will face former Slammer Tommy Mendoza (2-2) of River City.
First pitch is at 7:05 and the pre game show on 1340 WJOL begins at 6:50 p.m. The Slammers are honoring the 2013 3A State Baseball Champion Joliet Catholic Academy Hilltoppers before the game, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
