Florence Y'alls News Release
The Traverse City Beach Bums sent 10 hitters to the plate in a six-run seventh inning to rally past the Florence Freedom 9-7 Tuesday night at University of Cincinnati Medical Center Stadium.
The Beach Bums would score first as Chase Burch hit the first pitch of the second inning over the wall in left field to stake his club to a 1-0 lead.
The Freedom would rally back in the bottom half of the inning. The Freedom would send 10 to the plate and score four times in the frame to chase Traverse City starter Mike Devine with one out. The big blow in the inning was a two-run single by right fielder Kyle Bluestein.
In the top of the third, Traverse City would begin to claw their way back, scoring twice off of Daniel DeSimone, on a double by Taylor Wrenn and a sacrifice fly by Jose Vargas to cut the lead to 4-3.
The Freedom would push the lead back to three in the bottom of the third, the first run scoring on an error by left fielder Zach Komentani and the second coming on an RBI single by Junior Arrojo. Arrojo was thrown out trying to stretch the single into a double, ending the third with the Freedom on top 6-3.
It would stay a 6-3 game until the seventh as DeSimone would retire 12 straight batters through six innings and Chris Squires (W, 1-0) would throw three scoreless innings of relief for Traverse City.
DeSimone would give up a leadoff single to Komentani to start the seventh. The next batter would ground out to first base to move the runner up 90 feet. Catcher Chris Cowell would drive in Komentani with a single, and DeSimone would proceed to walk the next batter and exit the game. Left-hander Brent Choban would enter from the bullpen and walk the first batter he faced to load the bases for shortstop Taylor Wrenn. Wrenn, who had pushed his hitting streak to a league-best 16 games in the second, lined a double over the head of Kyle Bluestein in right field to clear the bases and put the Beach Bums on top 7-6. Choban (L, 2-2) would exit the game and Jose Velazquez would enter. Velazquez would promptly surrender a two-run home run to Jose Vargas to push the lead to 9-6.
The Freedom would cut the lead to two in the eighth on an RBI single by Jeremy Hamilton.
Florence would get no closer as Nick Capito (S, 2) would get Jacob Tanis to fly out to left with the bases loaded to end the game.
The Freedom meet the Beach Bums in the rubber match of this three game set tomorrow night at UCMC Stadium. First pitch is at 6:35 with the gates opening one hour earlier at 5:35. The game can be heard on 1320 AM WCVG or at gospel1320.com. Steve Jarnicki and Jake Meyer will have all the play-by-play action beginning with the pregame show at 6:20.
